Haruto: Learn Japanese · Last updated 18 October 2026
This policy explains what the Haruto: Learn Japanese app ("Haruto", "the app") does with your information. The app is published by TDevelopers ("we", "us"). Questions: tdeveloperindia@gmail.com.
1. What stays on your phone
Your learning progress, the scenes you've finished, your Memory Book, your chat history with Haruto, your settings, and the name, goal and language you choose during setup are stored on your device, not on our servers. Uninstalling the app deletes them. Section 2 lists what is sent out so the app can work.
2. What leaves your phone, and why
| What | Where it goes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Messages you send Haruto, and text you ask "Help me say it" for, plus recent chat context and your first name | Our server (Amazon Web Services, Mumbai, India), then Google's Gemini API | To write Haruto's reply. Our server passes the text on and does not keep it; our logs record errors only, never message text. |
| Your name, once during setup | Our server, then Google's Gemini API | To write your name in Japanese katakana. |
| Haruto's lines you play aloud | Our server, Google's Gemini API, and our cloud storage (Amazon S3) | To create his voice. The audio of a line is kept so the same line isn't generated twice; it can include the name he calls you. |
| Course text (scene lines, word meanings) and the language you read best | Our server, then Google's Gemini API | To translate lessons into your language. This text is ours, not yours. |
| An anonymous account ID | Google Firebase Authentication | Created automatically, with no email or phone number. It proves requests come from the app. |
| Daily counts (chats, voice lines, translations) for that ID, and your local date | Our server (Amazon DynamoDB, Mumbai) | To apply the free and Premium daily limits. Deleted automatically after 3 days. |
| A message you report, with what you had written just before it and your optional comment | Our server (Amazon DynamoDB, Mumbai) | Only when you tap the flag on one of Haruto's AI-written messages: so we can review it and improve his replies. Kept for one year, then deleted automatically. |
| How you use the app: screens you open and for how long, buttons you tap (for example starting a scene, opening the Memory Book, sending a chat message), scene progress, your plan, goal and reading language, and device and app details (model, OS and app version, country) | Google Analytics for Firebase, with the anonymous ID | To understand which parts of Haruto help people learn and where they get stuck, so we can improve it. It never includes what you write. Kept for up to 14 months, then deleted. |
| Purchase receipts and the anonymous ID | RevenueCat, Google Play, Apple App Store | To unlock Premium, restore it and manage your subscription. We never see your card or bank details. |
Like any internet service, these providers see your device's IP address when the app connects to them. Google processes text sent to Gemini under the Gemini API terms.
3. What we don't do
- No advertising. We don't collect your advertising ID, don't track you across other apps or websites, and send no data for ads.
- Usage analytics (above) never include your messages, your name or anything you type.
- We don't sell, rent or share your information for marketing.
- We don't ask for your email, phone number, contacts, location, camera or microphone.
4. Notifications
Haruto's daily messages and the reminder before a free trial ends are scheduled on your device. We don't send them from a server. You can turn them off in the app's Settings or in your phone's settings.
5. Subscriptions
Premium is sold through Google Play or the App Store, which handle payment, renewal and cancellation. Manage or cancel it in your Google Play or App Store subscriptions. Purchase records are kept by Google, Apple and RevenueCat as billing and tax laws require.
6. How long we keep data
- Chat and lesson text: not stored on our servers.
- Daily counts: deleted after 3 days.
- Messages you report: deleted after one year.
- Usage analytics: deleted after at most 14 months.
- Voice audio of Haruto's lines: kept while the app is offered, to avoid making the same line again.
- Everything on your phone: until you uninstall the app.
7. Deleting your data, and your rights
Haruto has no user accounts: the anonymous ID can't be used to sign in and isn't shown to you. To delete your data:
- On your phone: uninstall the app. This deletes your progress, chats, Memory Book and settings.
- On our servers: daily counts delete themselves after 3 days, and messages you reported after one year (or sooner if you ask, see below). Nothing else on our servers is linked to you.
- Subscription records (the anonymous ID at Firebase and RevenueCat): email tdeveloperindia@gmail.com with the subject "Delete my Haruto data". If you subscribed, include the order number from your Google Play or App Store receipt so we can find them. Records that billing and tax laws require us, Google or Apple to keep are kept only as long as required.
You can also ask us what we hold about you. Depending on where you live (for example the EU, the UK, California or India) you have further rights, such as correction and complaint to a data protection authority. We answer requests within 30 days.
8. Where data is processed
Our server runs in India (AWS Mumbai). Google, Firebase and RevenueCat may process data in the United States and other countries, under their own safeguards for international transfers.
9. Security
Everything travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Our storage is private; voice audio is shared with the app through short-lived links.
10. Children
Haruto is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has used the app, contact us and we'll delete what we hold.
11. Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
